La Fourchette

News this week

poppy's, Hong KongThis is a rather pleasant bistro in the basement of Pacific Place. The tables spill out into the open area at the cinema end of the mall. It's about as al fresco as you can get and still be in an air conditioned environment. That makes it a pretty good place to sit and people watch.

Personally I detest shopping but I have nothing against watching other people do it so long as a I can watch from behind a plate of good food, preferably with a glass of beer or wine. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay.

The decor is essentially modern but a funky tent like awning breaks up the hard lines of the surrounding mall and adds a little cosiness. The menu is mostly French but there is a selection of pasta and risotto dishes. There is also a selection of sandwiches if you are just in for a light snack.

The waiter showed me a rather delicious looking joint of roast ham that could be carved at my table as part of a set dinner. It was jolly tempting and I thought long and hard but in the end I decided I was more in the mood for lamb. ..(continued)

Poppy's Restaurant and Wine Bar

poppy's, Hong KongRecreating an Edwardian conservatory in Tin Hau was always going to be a bit tricky but I must admit the interior designers of Poppy have done a reasonable job. When you step inside there is a welcome sense of peace, the traffic rattling along Electric Road recedes into the distance and one can almost hear birds chirping.

Almost. What one actually does hear is the distant warble of boy bands, the only blot on an otherwise pleasing ambience. Though I have a sneaking suspicion I was the only one who cared.

Glancing around I couldn't help thinking of the book "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" and it wasn't lost on me that all of the other customers were indeed ladies. The ochre and cream striped walls behind wooden topped tables, lace curtains, mirrors, ceramic picture frames and abundance of plants do lend the place a very feminine touch.

There is an a la carte menu but they also offer half a dozen set dinner options which include the soup of the day, a main and a dessert...(continued)

Adagio

adagio restaurant, Hong KongAdagio is a neat little cafe on Wing Lok Street offering western style food in simple but functional surroundings. It's on the first floor above a flower shop, I got a table by the window where I was able to sit and look down at other people hurrying about.

I don't know what it is but there is something therapeutic about watching others hurry about while you are sitting waiting for a nice plate of food. I figured I'd better consult the menu and order something to wait for.

There is a set dinner menu offering four choices ranging in price from $158 to $198. But it was the smaller snack-sized dishes that caught my eye. I asked the waitress about how big these dishes were, she made a rectangular shape with her thumbs and index fingers. "Not too big then?" I asked. "Not too big." She confirmed.

Thinking they would probably be about the size of an average tapas I ordered four. Mixed mushrooms with butter and cream ($26), baked broccoli with bacon and cheese ($26), Deep fried salmon nuggets ($32) and roast tiger prawn with beef tenderloin skewers ($42)...(continued)
